As her eighteenth birthday approaches, Ruby discovers a family tree documenting the women born into her family die on their eighteenth birthdays. The answer lies in an old ballad and a mysterious harp of bone.
That song has something to do with the murders, I am sure of it. I tear through the book of ballads searching for those words from the gravestone as I squint against the sunlight. My legs stick to the searing metal bench beside Main Street, but it feels good after the overly air-conditioned library.
My hands tremble, and I’m flipping too fast. A page slices my fingertip like a box cutter. Then I see them: Lay the bent to the bonny broom.
I put my finger in my mouth, taste blood, and curse under my breath. It reminds me of Sarah Bear's bashed-in head from the newspaper article in my pocket. Who I am, and how I fit into this, is itself a riddle. I shiver like someone just stepped over my grave.
A shadow falls across my lap, and I look up into Joshua Bear's dark eyes.

Oh man this title sells the book. The concept is fresh and the opening is nicely written. Head shot!
